Artist Christo gets OK to drape canopies over Arkansas River
The federal government on Monday gave artist Christo the green light to drape shimmery canopies over the Arkansas River. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced the decision Monday morning.
State transportation agencies and two counties still must sign off.
Christo and his team have spent $11 million so far and say they’ll start work next spring — aiming for a two-week viewing period in August 2014. “Over the River” entails suspending 5.9 miles of fabric over eight segments of a 42-mile stretch of the Arkansas between Cañon City and Salida.
