Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has granted a temporary “temporary reprieve” for convicted killer Nathan Dunlap. In an executive order that provides an indefinite stay of execution, Hickenlooper writes that the decision has weighed heavily on him.

Staunton State Park finally open, a wilderness oasis near Denver

Colorado is opening its first new state park near metro Denver in 35 years Saturday, a protected patch of nature 36 miles southwest of the city.

The absence of a commerce-oriented visitor center at Staunton State Park emphasizes the natural assets of the place, such as Elk Creek Falls plummeting 100 feet over granite cliffs and views of the snow-packed north face of Pikes Peak.

The 3,828-acre park — a habitat for wild animals from tufted-eared squirrels and yellow-bellied marmots to black bears — also is expected to become a mecca for rock climbers, horseback riders, mountain bikers and hikers

Elsa Bailey celebrated her 100th birthday skiing at Arapahoe Basin

After celebrating her 100th birthday dining and dancing with friends, Elsa Bailey celebrated the first day of her 101st year on Saturday by fulfilling a promise she made a decade ago. She went skiing at Arapahoe Basin, just as she did when she turned 90.

Bailey has been skiing for 75 years. She started on a pair of $7 ash skis, when tickets for the rope tow in Vermont cost a dollar.

FLASH: Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes to plead not guilty by reason of insanity

James Holmes wants to plead not guilty by reason of insanity to the killing of 12 people and the wounding of 70 others in the Aurora movie theater attack.

In a filing Tuesday, Holmes’ lawyers wrote they intend to “tender a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.” Holmes would need a judge’s permission to change his plea.

UPDATE: Because a judge entered a standard not guilty plea on behalf of Holmes — and over the objection of Holmes’ attorneys — at arraignment, Holmes’ attorneys will have to show “good cause” why they should be allowed to change the plea to insanity.

Adult bullying? Intel worker subjected to ‘Kick Me’ prank files federal lawsuit

Intel workers secretly taped a “Kick Me” sign to the back of a co-worker as a prank, then kicked the confused man a number of times as employees at the Rio Rancho Intel plant laughed hysterically at the episode, according to a federal lawsuit.

Two involved co-workers lost their Intel jobs after the prank.

Colorado animal shelter gets environmental with excrement

It is estimated that 166 million cats and dogs in the U.S. in 2011 produced about 15.4 million tons of droppings.

And most of the annual droppings ends up in landfills.

Read how an animal shelter in Colorado is working with an Aurora-based company to put a dent in that waste by composting 2.5 tons of the shelter’s yearly “yard art.”

Tiny libraries in front yards across Colorado inspire love of books

When community activist Greg Rasheed first heard about tiny libraries popping up in front yards across America, he wanted to spark the trend in Denver.

He bought a bread box at Goodwill, filled it with books, put it in the front yard of his North City Park home and waited for folks to partake of his Little Free Library.

Soon enough, sanitation crews, construction workers and neighborhood kids were all grabbing books.

Pro-gun Native American billboard draws criticism

Two billboards in which images of Native Americans are used to make a gun rights argument are causing a stir with some residents who say the image is offensive and insensitive.

The billboards in this northern Colorado city show three men dressed in traditional Native American attire and the words “Turn in your arms. The government will take care of you.”

Colorado veterinary clinics see increase in dogs ingesting marijuana

A recent study shows marijuana-related toxicity cases among pets in Colorado has quadrupled between 2005 and 2010.

One Denver-area veterinarian says they treat as many as four to six animals a month for marijuana toxicity. Another clinic has even had patients ask for medical-marijuana cards for their pets.

If an animal consumes a large amount of pot, the psychoactive chemical, THC, can cause a dog to suffer seizures, go into a coma or die, vets say.

Shots fired in Denver’s Civic Center after pot rally, 3 shot

People were shot in Denver’s Civic Center during Saturday’s pot rally.

According to paramedics on the scene three people were shot. Denver police reported that one victim was shot in the leg and and another victim suffered unknown injuries.

All three victims are en route to Denver Health Medical Center.

Crowds converge on Denver for 4/20 marijuana rally

Thousands of people have converged on Denver’s Civic Center for what organizers say is the largest marijuana celebration in the country.

This is the first 4/20 rally since Colorado voters legalized marijuana use for people 21 and older in November, and rally organizers have said they expected 80,000 people to attend, though city officials say they expect fewer.

Last night, as the clock struck midnight on April 20, Snoop Lion tossed joints to the crowd at his Fillmore show, and the first legal 4/20 in Denver had officially begun.
