FLASH: Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes to plead not guilty by reason of insanity
James Holmes wants to plead not guilty by reason of insanity to the killing of 12 people and the wounding of 70 others in the Aurora movie theater attack.
In a filing Tuesday, Holmes’ lawyers wrote they intend to “tender a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.” Holmes would need a judge’s permission to change his plea.
UPDATE: Because a judge entered a standard not guilty plea on behalf of Holmes — and over the objection of Holmes’ attorneys — at arraignment, Holmes’ attorneys will have to show “good cause” why they should be allowed to change the plea to insanity.

The first look inside Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes’ apartment

The carpet was soaked with gasoline. A trip wire had been set up across the front door, attached to a thermos full of glycerine. The thermos was positioned over a pan full of chemicals. A spark would have ignited the whole apartment.

Gumbinner testified that Holmes told him he had left a “pyrotechnic firing box” wired to firework shells on top of his refrigerator. The box was remote-controlled. Holmes said he left the remote next to a remote-control car in an alley, hoping someone would play with the car and thus set off the device.

DA: Alleged Aurora theater shooter James Holmes made death threats in March
Suspected theater shooter James Holmes told a classmate in March that he wanted to kill people and that he would do so “when his life was over,” according to recently unsealed court documents filed by the prosecution.
The court record — filed in an attempt to obtain documents from the University of Colorado — also alleged Holmes made a threat June 12 to a professor and was denied access to campus at that point.
“After he was denied access to the CU-Denver Anschutz campus he began a detailed and complex plan to obtain firearms, ammunition, a tear-gas grenade, body armor, a gas mask and a ballistic helmet, which were used in the commission of the murders and attempted murders,” prosecutors wrote.

Cinemark won’t say if Aurora theater shooting back door was alarmed

A $70 alarm on the exit door in theater 9 might have prevented a mass shooting at the Century Aurora 16 multiplex.

But in today’s world of the multiplex, moving large crowds in and out of the building efficiently is paramount, and those exit doors play a key role in clearing a theater quickly.

Police believe Holmes went undetected by theater personnel as he propped open the door while he went to his car, got his guns and other equipment and returned.
