Anatomy of a hit song: Gotye’s big tune almost never happened, and now that it has, he’s not so sure about it
I’m thinking of a song. You’ve surely heard it, and you’ve possibly sung along with its ubiquitous chorus: “Now you’re just somebody that I used to know.”
Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” has become the biggest song of 2012, and its infectious bounce and memorable melody has taken over our collective short-term memory as much as it has dominated the airwaves.
And to think Gotye, a.k.a. Wally De Backer — who headlines Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Wednesday — almost didn’t include the song on his 2011 release “Making Mirrors.”

Jerry Krantz, the longtime owner of landmark Denver jazz club El Chapultepec, died this morning. He was 77.
In its heyday, El Chapultepec welcomed music legends such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as visiting rock stars like Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Bono. Krantz’s insistence on free, live, straight-ahead jazz every night of the week helped the ‘Pec — as insiders affectionately call it — stand out on the corner of 20th and Market streets in Lower Downtown.

Can drinking coffee help you live longer?
One of life’s simple pleasures just got a little sweeter. After years of waffling research on coffee and health, even some fear that java might raise the risk of heart disease, a big study finds the opposite: Coffee drinkers are a little more likely to live longer. Regular or decaf doesn’t matter.
The study of 400,000 people is the largest ever done on the issue, and the results should reassure any coffee lovers who think it’s a guilty pleasure that may do harm.

New vegan fare makes an animal-free diet tastier than ever
It wasn’t long ago that vegan meant brown rice, lentils, salads and noodles. Vegan was like vegetarian without the dollops of fun — the cheese, the cream, the butter.
It’s different now. The supermarket aisle for vegan products is growing, and offerings taste better than ever. Publishers release new vegan cookbooks every week, containing thousands of recipes for things that require quotation marks: macaroni and “cheese,” pulled “pork” sandwiches, “chicken” pot pie.
And restaurants increasingly offer vegan options. Some places, like Watercourse Foods and City O’ City in Denver, cater explicitly to both vegans and vegetarians.

Diablo III Launch Breaks Records and Servers
When Activision Blizzard’s long-awaited Diablo III went on sale at midnight, it had already broken records. Blizzard reports that the fantasy demon-killing game is its best pre-seller ever, and Amazon says it’s the most pre-ordered PC game yet.  But the game’s launch didn’t entirely go smoothly — this morning many gamers couldn’t log in, getting an “Error 37” message. This was so prevalent that the message about the software bug trended on Twitter.
