Mars rover lands with help from Colorado engineers
Colorado’s role in Curiosity’s mission to Mars began nearly nine months ago, when NASA’s $2.5 billion machine was sent on its space trajectory aboard a rocket created by United Launch Alliance, which has headquarters in Centennial. Placing the spacecraft on its the correct path was crucial for the spacecraft’s successful landing.
Additionally, Southwest Research Institute’s Boulder office created one of the 10 high-tech science instruments that will collect data related to Mars’ habitability. The mission’s primary goal is to determine past, present, and future elements that either facilitate or inhibit life on the planet.
The institute developed the Radiation Assessment Detector, RAD, which will analyze the characteristics of Mars’ radiation.

Boulder, Colorado, couple fulfill lifelong dream, living large in a 133-square-ft. home

Some homeowners prefer the sprawl of suburban McMansions. Others opt for cozy old bungalows near city centers.

Not too many opt for a 133-square-foot home — you read that correctly — that on first glance looks not much larger than a Great Dane’s doghouse.

But Christopher Smith and Merete Mueller did just that. The Boulder couple built a 7-by-19-foot wooden house whose foundation is a two-axle trailer bed. Last week, they towed it to a 5-acre patch of isolated hillside 20 minutes outside this town, which sits on South Park’s eastern edge.

Could you live in (or share) a space this small?

VIDEO: CU-Boulder uses fish fertilizer’s stench to discourage 420 rally on campus

Spokesman Bronson Hilliard said CU puts down the fish-based fertilizer around this time every year, but today’s application is no coincidence.

“Everything that we’re doing today is to make it unpleasant to stand or sit or be on Norlin Quad,” he said. “As you can see, it’s very odiferous. It does not smell nice at all.”

Glenn Grassi’s “micro-house” in Erie, Colo., is big on efficiency
In a town where 2,400-square-foot houses with finished basements dominate the marketplace, Glenn Grassi is betting the other way.
Oh, sure, his home has all the basics you’d expect — toilet, shower, bed, chair, table, stove, sink, even a hardwood floor.
But when all you’ve got is 84 square feet to work with, certain efficiencies must come into play. Grassi’s bed doubles as a shower, his chair doubles as a commode, and his wood-burning stove doubles as a furnace and cooking surface.

Housecat owner: “There was the mountain lion right there — about 4 feet away from me”

Zeus, an 11-year-old Maine coon cat, had a curious encounter with a young mountain lion. The cats checked each other out — from opposite sides of a sliding-glass door — last week in the Pine Brook Hills area of Boulder. Zeus’ owner said she was busy in the office of her home when she heard a noise and turned to see a young mountain lion on the porch.
