Colorado, Denver pets among fattest in nation

Colorado is said to have the fittest residents in the U.S., but it has a secret underbelly. And it is fat and furry.

Denver ranks among the top five cities for most overweight pets, along with Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Boston, according to the State of Pet Health 2012 Report.

In Denver — which comes in fourth-fattest — 24 percent of dogs and 26 percent of cats were overweight or obese in 2011.

If you think all cats are afraid of water, meet Maliha.

The Denver Zoo is adding a species of cat to its roster, a 5-year-old “fishing cat” named Maliha, according to a zoo media release.

Prionailurus viverrinus — fishing cat — is a cat species scattered throughout southwest India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra, Java and Pakistan. They live primarily in wetland areas like swamps, marshes and densely vegetated areas along rivers and streams.

Housecat owner: “There was the mountain lion right there — about 4 feet away from me”

Zeus, an 11-year-old Maine coon cat, had a curious encounter with a young mountain lion. The cats checked each other out — from opposite sides of a sliding-glass door — last week in the Pine Brook Hills area of Boulder. Zeus’ owner said she was busy in the office of her home when she heard a noise and turned to see a young mountain lion on the porch.

Animal care officials say a calico cat  named Willow who wandered off from a Colorado home five years ago has  been found on a Manhattan street.
How she traveled more than 1,600 miles is a mystery.
But thanks to a microchip implanted when she was a kitten, Willow will be reunited with her long-ago owners.

Meet Sizzle. This sweet black cat was found hiding under a rock on Sugarloaf Mountain near the burned area of the  Fourmile Canyon fire in September of 2010.  The cat had survived one of Boulder County’s  worst wildfires in history. Unsure of who the owners were, the veterinarians named the lucky survivor “Sizzle.”
