Family adopts “Bow,” puppy shot with crossbow

Bow, the puppy found shot in the leg with a crossbow, has a new home after he was adopted by a family in Colorado’s Four Corners area.

The 3-month-old Jack Russell-shepherd mix pup was found in Shiprock, N.M., with an arrow from a crossbow in his hind leg. He was taken to the Farmington Animal Shelter where surgery was performed to remove the bolt.

New Mexico authorities are still looking for those who are responsible for Bow’s injury.

Photos: Zeus, World’s Tallest Dog

Last week, we posted about a 3-year-old Great Dane called Zeus from Otsego, Michigan, who is featured in the new Guinness World Records 2013 book as the tallest dog ever, measuring 44 in (111.8 cm) from foot to withers.

Great Dane from Michigan is world’s tallest dog

A Great Dane from Michigan is doggone tall.

The Guinness World Records 2013 book published Thursday recognizes Zeus of Otsego, Mich., as the world’s Tallest Dog.

The 3-year-old measures 44 inches from foot to shoulder. Standing on his hind legs, Zeus stretches to 7-foot-4 and towers over his owner, Denise Doorlag.

Zeus weighs 155 pounds and eats a 30-pound bag of food every two weeks.

Man who left dog on Colorado mountain faces animal cruelty charge

A man who left his dog at the summit of Mount Bierstadt in Colorado will face animal cruelty charges.

The charge was filed after the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office completed an investigation into the “abandoned and injured” dog found on the Colorado fourteener earlier this month. 

A group of volunteers rescued the dog, a German shepherd, who was spotted wandering at an elevation of about 13,000 feet. She was carried off the mountain on Monday.

Colorado, Denver pets among fattest in nation

Colorado is said to have the fittest residents in the U.S., but it has a secret underbelly. And it is fat and furry.

Denver ranks among the top five cities for most overweight pets, along with Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Boston, according to the State of Pet Health 2012 Report.

In Denver — which comes in fourth-fattest — 24 percent of dogs and 26 percent of cats were overweight or obese in 2011.

Six little pigs have found a new friend in a maternal French bulldog  named Baby.
The Lehnitz animal sanctuary outside Berlin says Baby took  straight to the wild boar piglets when they were brought in, three days  old and shivering from cold.  Sanctuary  worker Norbert Damm said as soon as the furry striped piglets were  brought in, Baby ran over and started snuggling them and keeping them  warm, even though they’re already about her size.

Man who stabbed puppy in the face sentenced to probation

A 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty to stabbing a 6-month-old puppy named Diamond was sentenced to 30 months probation and will not be allowed to own another animal for that time.

Matthew Weatherspoon pled guilty Monday to a single felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals, and prosecutors agreed to a sentence of probation.

Instead, the young stray emerged frightened  but unscathed, wagging his tail. Now, he’s being hailed as a miracle  dog, given the name Daniel after the biblical figure who survived the  lion’s den. (The Associated Press)
