Colorado animal shelter gets environmental with excrement
It is estimated that 166 million cats and dogs in the U.S. in 2011 produced about 15.4 million tons of droppings.
And most of the annual droppings ends up in landfills.

Colorado veterinary clinics see increase in dogs ingesting marijuana
A recent study shows marijuana-related toxicity cases among pets in Colorado has quadrupled between 2005 and 2010. 
One Denver-area veterinarian says they treat as many as four to six animals a month for marijuana toxicity. Another clinic has even had patients ask for medical-marijuana cards for their pets.If an animal consumes a large amount of pot, the psychoactive chemical, THC, can cause a dog to suffer seizures, go into a coma or die, vets say.

Kids fight for abandoned dogs and cats to become Colorado state pets
A battle in the Colorado state legislature to make dogs and cats adopted from shelter and rescue centers the official state pet pitted schoolkids against professional lobbyists representing purebred dog clubs, retailers, groomers and dog-show organizers.
Advantage schoolkids. 
The bill passed, 6-3, but there were moments when the students thought their project, designed to help them learn about the legislative process, could go either way.

Chihuahuas off to the races at Cinco de Mayo celebration

They came from Thornton and Denver, Commerce City and Federal Heights with names like Eddie Beyonce and Mexicutioner, Lulu and Napoleon Bro Naparte.

But none ran like 2-year-old Wohdae, who narrowly edged out Topo Gigio to win the second annual Chihuahua races at Denver’s Cinco de Mayo celebration Sunday.

Wohdea bested a field of almost 50 dogs to take home the top prize, which included a two-day stay for his owners at Winter Park and tickets to that city’s jazz festival.

Canine survivor of shelter’s gas chamber hailed as miracle dog
Unnamed and unwanted, the young beagle mix  was left anonymously in a drop box outside an Alabama pound. His life  was supposed to end in a gas chamber.
Instead, the young stray emerged frightened  but unscathed, wagging his tail. Now, he’s being hailed as a miracle  dog, given the name Daniel after the biblical figure who survived the  lion’s den. (The Associated Press)

Photos: “Paws for a Dip” in the dog days of summer

Canine swimmers took to the city swimming pool in Thornton, Colo., for the 4th Annual “Paws for a Dip” Saturday morning, Aug. 27, 2011. The pool closed last Sunday, but opened up for one last day of the summer season for hundreds of dogs and their owners to get in one last splash.
